Ukrainian tennis player Angelina Kalinina lost in the final of the WTA 250 clay-court tournament in Rabat (Morocco).
The Ukrainian’s opponent in the title match was Croatian tennis player Petra Martincic. She is no stranger to Ukrainian fans: in Morocco, she knocked out another of our compatriots, Yelizaveta Kotlyar, from the tournament, while at the tournament in Rome, she was defeated by Oleksandra Oliinykova. She had never played Kalinina before, which made the match particularly intriguing.
In the first set, the Ukrainian didn’t feel her best from the start. She “caught” an early break, and the score quickly reached 1-5. The Croatian put significant pressure on Kalinina and ultimately took the set 2-6.
The second set was even faster. The set unfolded according to the same script: another lost service game at 30-40, bringing the score to 0-3. Kalinina decided not to continue the match and ultimately withdrew from the final to conserve her energy ahead of Roland Garros and avoid wasting unnecessary energy before the main tournament of the clay-court season.
Thanks to her performance in the Moroccan capital, Angelina Kalinina will rise to 59th place next week and become Ukraine’s fifth-ranked player, overtaking Oleksandra Oliinykova.
