Ukrainian tennis players have broken the national record for WTA finals

Ukrainian female tennis players have set a new national record by reaching eight WTA tournament finals in the 2026 season. Angelina Kalinina made a decisive contribution by advancing to the final in Rabat. This surpassed the previous record, which had stood since 2017, according to the BTU.

Ukrainian women’s tennis is having a season that can already be called one of the strongest in history, as the athletes are not only consistently reaching decisive matches but are also systematically competing for titles at the WTA level, which has allowed them to set a new national record for the number of finals in a single year.

The final step toward the record was taken by Angelina Kalinina, who reached the final of the WTA 250 tournament in Rabat, and this result marked the eighth final for Ukrainian women in the 2026 season, according to the BTU. The previous record for Ukrainian women stood for two consecutive seasons—2017 and 2018—when seven finals were recorded each year, and it was then that the foundation for the current wave of success in Ukrainian women’s tennis was laid.

Among the key players of the season are Elina Svitolina, who won titles in Auckland and Rome and reached the final in Dubai, Marta Kostyuk, who claimed victories in Madrid and Rouen and also reached the final in Brisbane, as well as Yulia Starodubtseva and Veronika Podrez, who added finals in Charleston and Rouen.

It is worth noting that while the record for the number of finals has already been broken, the all-time record for titles still belongs to 2017, when Ukrainian tennis players won all seven final matches, and five of them were won by Elina Svitolina, which remains one of the strongest seasonal results in the history of Ukrainian tennis.

Lionel Messihas chosen his successor in soccer.

As a reminder, the IOC has allowed Russian junior athletes to compete under the national flag.
