Oleksandr Usyk and Rico Verhoeven made weight ahead of their fight in Giza
WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight boxing world champion Oleksandr Usyk and Dutch kickboxer Rico Verhoeven underwent the official weigh-in ahead of their bout.
This was reported by The Ring.
The Ukrainian champion weighed in at 105.8 kg, while his opponent weighed 117.3 kg, a difference of more than 11 kilograms in Verhoeven’s favor.
The official weigh-in ceremony is scheduled for today at 8:00 p.m.
The fight between 39-year-old Usyk and 37-year-old Verhoeven will take place on the night of Saturday, May 24, in Giza, Egypt.
Rico Verhoeven held the Glory promotion’s super heavyweight kickboxing world title for 12 years, making this matchup one of the most anticipated in mixed martial arts.
Usyk had previously stated that he plans to have no more than three fights before retiring, and one of them is against Verhoeven.
Prior to this, Usyk and Verhoeven held a joint press conference ahead of the fight and engaged in another war of words, where they openly expressed respect for one another but also their readiness for a tough battle. Both athletes emphasized that despite their different disciplines, they are united by a love of combat and competition.
The fight is expected to be broadcast in Ukraine on the Kyivstar TV platform, and the bout itself is already being called one of the most intriguing showdowns between representatives of different fighting styles in recent years.
