Usyk and Verkhoven locked eyes in a stare-down ahead of their big fight
Usyk and Verhoeven held a joint press conference ahead of the fight and engaged in yet another stare-down, during which they openly expressed respect for one another but also their readiness for a tough bout. Both athletes emphasized that despite competing in different disciplines, they are united by a love of combat and competition, according to Suspilne Sport.
Ahead of the big fight in Egypt, Oleksandr Usyk and Rico Verhoeven found themselves in the spotlight once again when they engaged in another stare-down even before the press conference began, and that moment immediately set the tone for the entire exchange between the champions.
Usyk, who will be defending his titles, calmly and without unnecessary drama described his attitude toward his opponent, emphasizing that high-level sport is always based on mutual respect, even if things look completely different in the ring. “I respect all my opponents, because I know what it’s like. Those who train in boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling are extraordinary, if not crazy, people,” said Usyk, highlighting the complexity and intensity of the sport.
Verhuven, in turn, noted that despite their different disciplines and career paths, he and the Ukrainian champion have something in common—the ring and the desire to win, as well as an understanding that every fight demands total commitment. “Usyk and I are both fathers; I love kickboxing, he loves boxing, but we both love fighting,” noted the Dutchman, adding that he is fully aware of the magnitude of the challenge.
Verhuven also recalled that he returned to boxing after a break in kickboxing, where he held the title of champion, and now has the chance to immediately compete for the WBC and The Ring titles, which makes his path to this fight even more remarkable and intense.
Despite their calm demeanor, both athletes make no secret of the fact that it will be a completely different story in the ring, where respect will be left outside the ropes, and endurance, strategy, and cold concentration will be decisive.
The fight is expected to be broadcast in Ukraine on the Kyivstar TV platform, and the bout itself is already being called one of the most intriguing matchups between representatives of different fighting styles in recent years.
