Martínez, despite a broken finger, helped Aston Villa win the Europa League
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez broke his finger shortly before the start of the Europa League final, but remained on the field and helped his team secure a 3-0 victory over Freiburg.
This was reported by BBC Sport.
The injury occurred a few minutes before the opening whistle. Medical staff conducted an emergency examination right on the field, but the Argentine goalkeeper decided not to ask to be substituted.
“For me, every bad thing brings something good. Should I be worried? I’ve never broken a finger before. Every time I caught the ball, it bounced off in the other direction. But that’s something you have to go through. I’m proud to defend Aston Villa,” said Martinez.
This is the English club’s first victory in the Europa League. The last time Aston Villa won European trophies was in 1982, when they claimed the European Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
