The fight between Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Usyk and kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven near the Egyptian pyramids in Giza has generated such high interest that tickets are practically sold out even before the event, and now only a few seats in the farthest rows of the arena remain on sale.
The organizers have effectively declared the event almost completely sold out, as nearly 99% of tickets had already been sold earlier, and the remaining few—fewer than a few dozen—were available only for the cheapest and least comfortable seats. “Tickets for general sale are officially sold out, meaning the organizers’ prediction of a complete sellout has come true,” the publication notes.
Ticket prices for this event, if they were still available, ranged from 2,100 to 5,800 Egyptian pounds, which is approximately 1,900 to 4,750 hryvnias, making the fight significantly more affordable compared to major bouts in the U.S., Saudi Arabia, or the U.K.
A unique feature of this evening will be the venue itself, as a temporary arena is being constructed right next to the pyramids in Giza, one of the world’s most famous archaeological landmarks, and the ring will be placed on a specially prepared platform to avoid damaging the historical sites and the excavation area.
The fight itself is generating interest not only because of the scale of the event but also because of the Ukrainian’s opponent, as Rico Verhoeven is a true kickboxing legend with 76 professional fights and 66 wins, although his experience in classic boxing is limited to a single bout in 2014.
After this fight, Usyk plans to return to more traditional opponents in boxing and is considering possible bouts with the winner of the WBO title fight, as well as a potential trilogy with Tyson Fury, which could serve as the grand finale of his career.
