Kostyuk confidently advanced to the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk scored a decisive victory over Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the second round of a prestigious tournament in Spain. Throughout the match, which lasted 1 hour and 14 minutes, the Ukrainian dominated on the court, allowing her opponent to win only four games in the entire match.

Glavkom reports on the successful start of Ukraine’s No. 2 player on the clay courts of Madrid.

Kostiuk began the match with a run of four consecutive games, closing out the first set 6-1, and consolidated her lead in the second set with a 6-3 victory. Despite seven double faults, aggressive play on the return and two aces allowed Marta to become the second Ukrainian woman after Angelina Kalinina to advance to the round of 32 in the current tournament. In the next round, Kostyuk will face the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula and British player Katie Boulter.

The successes of Ukrainian tennis players on the international stage remain an important element of sports diplomacy amid the war against Russia. The tournament in Madrid is one of the key stages of preparation for the French Open, and Kostyuk’s confident victory over Putintseva confirms her excellent physical form. Further progress by the Ukrainian contingent in the WTA 1000 draw could lead to an improvement in our athletes’ positions in the world rankings. Spectators are looking forward to intense matches next week, when other top-seeded players will join the competition.

Kostyuk became the champion of the tournament in Rouen, defeating Podrez in the final.

Fedorchuk called Rebrov a "little Napoleon" and criticized the national team.
