Marta Kostyuk lost to Andreeva in the Roland Garros semifinals

Ukraine's top-ranked player, Marta Kostyuk, failed to advance past the semifinals at the French Open (Roland Garros) in Paris, missing out on the chance to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament in women’s singles for the first time in her career. 

In the decisive match, the Ukrainian lost to Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva, who is competing under a neutral flag. 

Prior to this match, Kostyuk had a successful streak against Andreeva, defeating her twice in 2026 without dropping a single set. However, the most important match of the 23-year-old Ukrainian’s career did not go according to plan from the very beginning. Marta made uncharacteristic errors, appeared uncertain on her finishing shots, and the opening set ended in a crushing 1-6 defeat.

In the second set, the pattern of play did not change significantly: Andreeva kept the match close, minimized her unforced errors, and served aces with confidence. With the score at 1-4 in favor of the Russian, Kostyuk showed character, seized the initiative, and managed to break her opponent’s serve to level the set at 3-3. However, this comeback proved short-lived—Andreeva immediately responded with a break of her own and successfully served out the match. The final score was 1-6, 3-6 in Andreeva’s favor. Despite this painful defeat, reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros remains one of Marta Kostyuk’s greatest achievements in Grand Slam singles tournaments.
