Mexico wrapped up the group stage of the 2026 World Cup with a landslide victory over the Czech Republic
On June 25, the Mexican national team secured its third consecutive victory at the 2026 World Cup, defeating the Czech Republic 3–0 in the final match of the group stage. The team finished the group stage on a high note and continues its run in the tournament.
The Czech national team started the match aggressively and tried to apply high pressure on their opponents from the very first minutes. For example, Denis Vyshinsky had an excellent chance to open the scoring, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area went wide of the post. After that, play was mostly concentrated in the middle of the field, although both teams periodically created dangerous chances. The Czechs came close to scoring after a long throw-in, when Sadílek took a volley, while the Mexicans responded with a chip shot by Reyes and a powerful attempt by Quiñones late in the half. Despite several promising attacks from both sides, the teams went into halftime scoreless.
After the break, the Czech Republic immediately created a dangerous chance when Schulz took a shot from the center of the penalty area, but the goalkeeper dealt with the threat. However, the momentum gradually shifted to Mexico. In the 55th minute, Luis Romo won a battle for the ball in midfield and launched an attack that was finished by Mateo Chávez with a precise shot from inside the penalty area into the far corner. Just six minutes later, the Mexicans doubled their lead. Following a major mistake by the Czech defense and poor play by Tomáš Holeš and goalkeeper Matěj Kovář, the ball found its way to Julián Quiñones, who easily slotted it into the empty net.
After conceding the second goal, the Czechs tried to get back into the game, made a series of substitutions, and controlled the ball more, but they were unable to create any real threat on their opponent’s goal. In the second half, play was briefly interrupted by a water break, and toward the end of the match, the Czechs suffered a setback when Tomáš Souček was injured and forced to leave the field early. The Mexicans, meanwhile, calmly saw the match through to victory, and in the 78th minute, legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa even took the field.
However, the Mexicans decided to treat their fans to one more goal as an encore, scored by Álvaro Hidalgo in the 90+4th minute. In the end, the Mexican national team confidently defeated the Czech Republic 3–0, earning nine out of nine points in the group stage and advancing to the knockout round as group winners.
