A Dutch swimmer set a world record in the 100-meter freestyle

Three-time world champion Marrit Stenbergen of the Netherlands broke the world record in the 100-meter freestyle at the prestigious Sette Colli swimming competition in Rome. The 26-year-old swimmer completed the race in 51.68 seconds.

Stenbergen improved upon the previous world record set by the legendary Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjöström—which had stood since 2017—by three hundredths of a second.

This is the second time in a few weeks that Sjöström’s world record has fallen, as American swimmer Kate Douglas recently surpassed her time in the 50-meter freestyle. For the Netherlands, this achievement was historic, as Stenbergen became the first Dutch swimmer to set a world record in an individual Olympic event since 2009, and the first in the 100-meter freestyle since Inge de Bruijn’s triumph at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The decorated Dutch swimmer now has three World Championship gold medals, one victory at the Short Course World Championships, and six gold medals from the European Championships to her credit.

This was reported by the international federation World Aquatics.
