Google recorded a record-breaking surge in traffic after Argentina's game-winning goal
The Google search engine set a new all-time record for the number of search queries following Argentina’s winning goal in the World Cup match.
It was Argentina’s winning goal that triggered an unprecedented surge in user activity on the search engine.
“Google broke all previous records for the number of search queries and recorded the highest level of activity in its history immediately after Argentina scored the winning goal,” Fox noted.
Despite the record-breaking traffic, the company did not disclose the exact number of search queries. At the same time, Google reported that among the most popular queries were “Argentina vs. Egypt,” information about Argentina’s match against Colombia, the number of goals Lionel Messi has scored in World Cups, soccer rules, and questions about whether this tournament would be the last in the Argentine star’s career.
The company emphasized that the historic record was set at the moment of peak fan excitement, when the Argentine national team staged a stunning comeback.
By the 79th minute, Argentina was trailing 0–2, but managed to score three goals in 14 minutes and secure the victory, which triggered a record surge in global search activity.
