The new coach of the Ukrainian national team will move to Lviv with his family
Andrea Maldera, the first foreign head coach of the Ukrainian national team, has decided to live in Ukraine for the duration of his tenure. He will move to Lviv with his wife and dog, emphasizing that his role will extend beyond matches and training camps. Maldera wants to be closer to the team and Ukrainian fans, combining a sporting and symbolic mission.
This was reported by "Tribuna."
What did Maldera say?
According to the Italian, the decision to settle in Lviv was a personal one and was made after consulting with the UAF. Maldere emphasized that under the current circumstances, he wants to be as involved as possible in the life of the country and to help not only as a soccer specialist. His wife and pet will move to Ukraine with him.
It was my decision. Together with representatives of the federation, we thoroughly evaluated various options regarding how this could work and in which city. We settled on the city of Lviv. At such a critical moment for Ukraine, this role carries great responsibility. And it’s not just about me being a coach who merely watches matches. But for now, I would like to offer my assistance in any activity the UAF needs,” added the Italian.
This move has already resonated with fans, as the new coach is effectively demonstrating a full immersion in the Ukrainian context, rather than the remote working model often practiced with national teams.
Recall that Maldini’s predecessor, Serhiy Rebrov, was criticized for his stay in Spain.
A historic appointment following the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup
55-year-old Maldini became the first foreigner to lead Ukraine’s national team following Serhiy Rebrov’s departure. A two-year contract with the coach was signed, with an option to extend.
He previously worked on Andriy Shevchenko’s coaching staff and also gained experience at Milan, Brighton, and Marseille.
