Swimmer Russel Pang sets Singapore record at Asian Games — Channel NewsAsia
In Tokyo, Japan, 16-year-old Singaporean swimmer Russel Pang set a national record in the 1,500-metre freestyle at the Asian Games. The competition debutant covered the distance in 15 minutes 22.16 seconds and finished second in the B final.
As Channel NewsAsia reports, Pang’s previous national record was 15 minutes 25.58 seconds. The swimmer set it in July at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Pang said he was pleased with the result and believes that preparation for the Asian Games paid off. At the same time, he noted that he had hoped to swim the distance faster than 15 minutes 20 seconds.

The swimmer also said that he was happy to be part of a new generation of athletes and aims to make Singapore proud. Pang is also Singapore’s national record holder in the 800-metre freestyle.
Other performances by Singaporean swimmers
A day earlier, 16-year-old Tedd Chan, who also made his Asian Games debut, set a Singapore national record in the 50-metre backstroke. He finished eighth in the final.
Another Singapore representative, Gan Ching Hwee, reached the final in the 400-metre freestyle, placing fifth in the qualifiers with a time of 4 minutes 13.05 seconds. Earlier at these Games, the 23-year-old swimmer won a silver medal in the 1,500-metre freestyle, while her split time of 8 minutes 29.56 seconds over the first 800 metres became a new national record.
