Human rights activists want to bar Infantino from the FIFA presidential election

The human rights organization FairSquare has called for Gianni Infantino to be barred from running in the FIFA presidential election. The organization opposes his potential participation in the upcoming election.

The election for president of the International Federation of Association Football is scheduled to take place in March 2027.

In a letter to FIFA’s Governance, Audit, and Compliance Committee, FairSquare notes that Infantino’s bid for a fourth term violates the statutes: according to the rules, the president may serve no more than three terms. However, in 2022, the committee decided not to count Infantino’s first term (2016–2019), as he was allegedly completing Sepp Blatter’s interrupted term. FairSquare considers the decision unlawful: the statutes contain no exceptions—it does not matter how long the term lasted or at which congress the president was elected.

The Norwegian Football Federation joined the statement, expressing its support for the complaint.

Infantino was elected FIFA president at an extraordinary congress in February 2016. The next FIFA presidential election will take place in March 2027.

This was reported by The Athletic.

Trump has spoken out against replacing Infantino as FIFA president.

As a reminder, the soccer associations of Sweden and Wales have decided to no longer support Gianni Infantino in the upcoming election for president of the International Federation of Association Football. England may join them in the near future.

UEFA is considering filing a lawsuit against FIFA over the now-canceled plan to sell a stake in the commercial rights to the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors.
