Russia was stripped of its 2012 Olympic medals
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially annulled the result of Russian track and field athlete Katerina Gulieva at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Due to anti-doping rule violations, the Russian Federation lost its silver medal in the 800-meter race.
The sports scandal surrounding the results of the London Olympics has reached a legal conclusion after a lengthy review of the case.
Russian runner Katerina Gulieva, who took second place on the podium, was officially disqualified for using banned substances back in March 2024.
The athlete attempted to appeal this decision, but on May 23, 2025, her appeal was definitively rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Russia’s loss of the medal led to an automatic redistribution of the Olympic medals among the other participants in the final race. Consequently, the silver medal in the 800-meter race at the 2012 Olympics was awarded to Kenyan track and field athlete Pamela Jelimo.
Accordingly, the bronze medal from the prestigious competition has now officially been awarded to U.S. athlete Alicia Montano.
