Switzerland convincingly defeated Algeria and advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup

The playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway. The Swiss national team easily defeated Algeria 2–0 and secured a spot in the round of 16.

Algeria was the more active team early in the match in Vancouver, but it was the Europeans who scored. Vargas and Manzambi broke through the Algerian defense, and Embolo finished with a precise shot after a cross from the wing. For Embolo, this is already his fourth goal-scoring contribution at the World Cup—he has two goals and two assists to his credit.

Murat Yakin’s team tried to build on their lead before halftime, but Zakaria’s header sailed wide of the goal.

Switzerland doubled its lead right at the start of the second half. The Algerian players were sloppy on defense, and N’Doye took advantage, firing the ball into the far corner. With the score at 0–2, the “Desert Foxes” had no choice but to take risks and push forward in force.

The Swiss tried to exploit the open space on the attack, and Embolo could have scored his second goal if he had gotten to Vargas’s cross in time. Later, Rieder had a chance to score, but Algerian defender Mandi stood in the way. A few minutes later, Rieder got another chance and wasted it again, shooting straight at the opposing goalkeeper, Zidane. As for the “Desert Foxes,” Maza had one last chance to keep the game alive in stoppage time, but his shot was blocked.

In the end, Switzerland confidently defeated Algeria 2–0 and will face the winner of the Colombia–Ghana match in the next round of the playoffs.
