Sprinter Sinesipho Dambile wins historic Commonwealth Games gold — Daily Maverick
South African sprinter Sinesipho Dambile won the gold medal in the 200 metres at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, United Kingdom. With a time of 19.96 seconds, the 24-year-old became the first South African to win the men's race over this distance in the tournament's history, Daily Maverick reports.
Diamond League results
Dambile finished first in the overall Diamond League standings. He won the meet in Doha, placed second five times and finished third once. The sprinter came second in the Diamond League final in Brussels.
During the season, he set personal bests twice, including running the 200 metres in 19.74 seconds in Doha in June. The athlete covered the distance in under 20 seconds nine times, with eight such races in a row since June. Last year, Dambile broke 20 seconds for the first time, clocking 19.97 seconds in the World Championships semi-finals in Tokyo.

Injuries and the next goal
After moving from the junior to senior level, Dambile suffered injuries on several occasions. In 2022, he won his first South African national title in the 200 metres, but injuries hampered his progress in the following seasons. Health problems in 2024 led to a lengthy break from competing at a high level.
In May, the athlete also withdrew from the World Relays due to injury, a week after winning the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi in 19.77 seconds. Dambile finished fourth at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest.
The South African said he aims to continue improving his speed and consistently compete for medals against the world's strongest track and field athletes. If he continues to progress, he could move closer to South Africa's 200-metre record of 19.69 seconds, set by Clarence Munyai in 2018.
