A referee suffered a concussion during the Metz–Fortuna match
Matilda Demonse, the head referee of the friendly match between France’s “Metz” and the Netherlands’ “Fortuna Sittard,” suffered a concussion following a mass brawl among the players.
The incident occurred in the 40th minute of the match. After a hard foul on a Fortuna player, a brawl broke out between the teams. The 26-year-old referee tried to intervene and break up the fight, but found herself in the middle of the scuffle and was struck, causing her to fall to the field.
Medical staff, assistant referees, and security personnel immediately rushed to the referee’s aid. After receiving treatment for several minutes, Demonse was able to continue the match, though no longer as the head referee—one of the assistant referees took over her duties.
The referee did not return to the field in the second half. According to Dutch media reports, a spectator with refereeing experience helped bring the match to a close.
After the final whistle, players from both teams apologized to Demonse for the incident. It was later reported that medical staff diagnosed her with a mild concussion.
The match ended with a 3-1 victory for Metz. Adding to the irony of the situation was the fact that the scuffle between the players took place in front of a billboard reading “Respect the Referee.”
