Zidane has been named head coach of the French national team; the legend has returned to coaching
Legendary French soccer player and coach Zinedine Zidane has officially become the new head coach of the French national team. The 54-year-old coach replaced Didier Deschamps in this role and has returned to coaching after a five-year hiatus.
Zidane has been tasked with preparing the team for upcoming major tournaments—Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. This will be his first experience coaching the national team as head coach.
Deschamps’ Replacement and New Goals
Zidane replaced Didier Deschamps as head coach of Les Bleus. The previous coach’s resignation came after France’s 0–2 loss in the World Cup semifinals to the eventual champions, Spain.
The new head coach has been tasked with leading a generational transition within the national team and achieving success at the next two major international tournaments—the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup.
A Legend Returns After a Long Hiatus
For Zidane, this appointment marks a long-awaited return to top-level soccer. The French coach had been out of work since June 2021, when he left Real Madrid for the second time.
With the Madrid club, Zidane won three consecutive Champions League titles, was crowned Spanish champion twice, and also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Zidane’s Career
Zinedine Zidane played 108 matches for the French national team. His achievements include victories at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
As a coach, the legendary Frenchman has worked exclusively with Real Madrid. At the helm of the Spanish powerhouse, he has won 11 trophies, including three consecutive Champions League titles.
