Tennis player Coco Gauff defeats Xinran Sun in Beijing — Interia Sport
American tennis player Coco Gauff defeated China’s Xinran Sun in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, China. Third-seeded Gauff won the match 7:5, 6:1 in 89 minutes and advanced to the fourth round, where she will play Belgium’s Elise Mertens. This was reported by Interia Sport.
A tense first set
Sixteen-year-old Sun, who received a wildcard into the main draw, was making her debut at this level of competition. Before facing Gauff, she had progressed through two rounds, including defeating 27th-seeded Cristina Bucșa.
In the opening set, Sun kept pace with the favorite for a long time and led 5:4 while Gauff was serving to stay in the set. At 15:15, a controversial situation arose: the point was initially awarded to the Chinese player, but Gauff asked for a review of the episode, saying that something had distracted her during the rally. Umpire Myriam Bley ruled that the point should be replayed.

Opponent in the fourth round
At the start of the second set, Sun made two consecutive double faults at the end of the first game, and Gauff quickly took a double-break lead. The Chinese player managed to win one game on the American’s serve, but Gauff did not concede another game to her opponent for the rest of the match.
In the next round, the American will face Elise Mertens, who eliminated Jelena Ostapenko from the tournament. A possible quarterfinal between Gauff and Iga Świątek will take place if the American defeats Mertens and the Polish tennis player beats Iva Jovic. The WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing will run until October 11.
