In Milan, Italy, a farewell ceremony for former Italy national team and Inter footballer Sandro Mazzola will take place on September 21. On the day of the funeral, flags on the city’s public buildings have been lowered to half-mast, and the ceremony will be held at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio.
Career at Inter and with the national team
Mazzola died during the night between Friday and Saturday at the age of 83, ANSA English reports. The forward was one of the key figures of the Grande Inter of the 1960s. With the club, he won four Italian league titles and twice won the European Cup — in 1964 and 1965.

In the 1964 European Cup final against Real Madrid, which ended in a 3-1 victory for Inter, Mazzola scored twice. He made 70 appearances and scored 22 goals for the Italy national team. He also became European champion in 1968 and played in the 1970 World Cup final.

Sandro Mazzola was the son of Valentino Mazzola, a footballer of the great Torino team who died in the 1949 Superga air disaster. The day before, Juventus condemned the behavior of some of its supporters, who did not observe a minute of silence in Mazzola’s memory before the match against Atalanta in Turin.
