Four friends complete Tallinn half marathon in handcuffs — ERR News

In Tallinn, Estonia, four friends from England ran the 21-kilometre half-marathon distance while connected to each other by handcuffs. They finished in 1 hour, 29 minutes and 29 seconds and are seeking to register a record in the category of the fastest half marathon for a group of four people in restraints, ERR News reports.

Training without handcuffs

One of the participants, Joshua Lally, said that the group did not train in handcuffs before the race. According to him, the handcuffs that the friends had planned to use for training were confiscated at the airport. After arriving in Tallinn, they bought others and were able to try running together in them only during the warm-up.

Before the start, the friends trained together, including doing interval running workouts without arm movements. During the race, coordination proved difficult: the four started at the back so as not to interfere with other participants, while manoeuvring among runners and getting around obstacles required additional effort. Lally noted that due to the lack of arm movements, their arms and upper bodies tired quickly.

Confirmation of the result

The participants also ran in striped costumes styled as prison clothing. According to Lally, spectators supported the group of four along the route, recorded videos and joked that the police were chasing the runners.

The result still has to undergo an official confirmation procedure. To ratify the achievement, the group needs photos and videos from the race, which took place on Saturday, September 12. Lally filmed the team every two kilometres, but believes that the quality of these recordings is insufficient to confirm the record.

Other results were also recorded during the Tallinn marathon weekend. Oleksandr Kulieshov set an Estonian record in the M45–49 age category, completing the marathon in 2:29:29. Siiri Kaaver improved the national record among women in the W60–64 category with a time of 3:30:30.
