Wakefield beat Leigh and will face them in the Super League play-offs

Wakefield Trinity defeated Leigh Leopards 19:8 in the final round of the Super League rugby league season. The teams finished fourth and fifth respectively and will meet again in an elimination play-off match in Yorkshire on September 18. As Sky Sports News reports, fourth place was Wakefield’s best result in the club’s Super League history.

Wakefield’s victory

Tom Johnstone scored a try early in the match after a kick from Jake Trueman, putting Wakefield ahead 4:0. Max Jowitt later converted two penalties, while Johnstone scored his second try to make it 12:0. Before half-time, Trueman kicked a drop goal to extend his team’s lead to 13:0.

In the second half, Leigh reduced the deficit through a try by Owen Trout. After Mason Lino was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul, Innes Senior scored another try to make it 13:8. However, with three minutes remaining, Cam Scott scored in the corner and Jowitt converted to make it 19:8. Leigh beat Wakefield in the 2025 play-offs, but has not defeated this opponent in the current season.
