Polish cyclist Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Finny crashed on the final sharp turn before the finish of the European Championships road race in Slovenia. The athlete, who was riding in a group of medal contenders about a kilometre before the finish, got back up and crossed the finish line in sixth place, Interia Sport reports.

In the final section, Niewiadoma-Finny attempted to take the turn on the inside line. According to Eurosport commentators, the cyclist took a risk to get through the bend faster, but it resulted in a crash onto her right side. The commentators also drew attention to her injured arm after the finish.

Speaking to the YouTube channel Cycling Pro Net, Niewiadoma-Finny said that her entire body hurts. According to the athlete, the participants were fighting for position before the turn, and her front wheel likely lost grip. She added that she wants to watch the incident again to understand the cause of the crash.

Dutch riders took the top two places

Dutch rider Demi Vollering won the race after breaking away from her rivals. Her national team teammate Puck Pieterse took second place. Several days before the European Championships, Niewiadoma-Finny won the silver medal at the World Championships overseas.
