The Spanish national team's goalkeeper set a new World Cup record

Spain’s national team goalkeeper Unai Simón made World Cup history by setting a new record for the longest streak of minutes without conceding a goal. This achievement was made possible by the goalkeeper’s solid performance and the confident play of his teammates.

The day before, “La Furia Roja” crushed the Austrian national team (3–0) in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The goalkeeper has not conceded a single goal in this year’s tournament. The last time Simona was beaten was by Japan during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Since then, the Spanish goalkeeper has kept a clean sheet in the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, three group stage matches at this year’s World Cup, and the playoff match against Austria. Simona’s streak lasted 519 minutes. He surpassed the record set by Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga (518 minutes) during the 1990 World Cup.
