The story of the Usyk family—a story not everyone knows

Behind every major victory by Oleksandr Usyk are the people who shaped his character. His father introduced the future champion to boxing and instilled discipline in him, while his mother remains his biggest supporter to this day, even though she hardly ever watches her son’s fights because she gets too nervous.

Usyk himself has said many times that he learned a great deal from his parents. Their life principles, support, and upbringing helped him go from a boy from Simferopol to the undisputed world champion.

Oleksandr Usyk was born in Simferopol to Oleksandr and Nadiya Usyk. Despite their son’s global fame, his parents have always remained private individuals who shun the spotlight. At the same time, they were the ones who largely shaped the character of the future champion.

The Father Who Introduced Usyk to Boxing

The athlete’s father—Oleksandr Usyk Sr.—was born in 1962 in the village of Terny in the Sumy region. This village has a long history. It was founded as far back as the 17th century, and its first inhabitants were Cossack centurions who served in the Sumy Regiment. Interestingly, even today, more than a dozen families with the surname Usyk live in Terny. That is why the boxer has often spoken about his Cossack roots and explained why he feels such a strong connection to Ukrainian history.

When the future champion’s father was five or six years old, the family moved away from the Sumy region. At the same time, their old house in Terny has survived to this day. Although the house has long been abandoned, it still stands in its original place. It was his father who first took little Sasha to a sports club. That decision would go on to change the future champion’s entire life.

His upbringing was strict

Oleksandr Usyk makes no secret of the fact that his childhood was marked by strict discipline. According to him, his father raised him in an almost military-style manner. The athlete has mentioned on several occasions that his father was a man of few words and rarely showed emotion. “He told me ‘I love you’ only once—after I became an Olympic champion,” Usyk recalled.

The boxer explains that he fully understands the reasons behind this upbringing. His father was born and raised in the Soviet Union and also fought in the war in Afghanistan. “People of that generation hardly ever spoke to their children or wives about their feelings. Now I’m raising my children completely differently,” the champion said.

He didn’t live to see his son’s greatest victories

After Usyk’s triumph at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the athlete’s father passed away. The boxer himself has said more than once that he would have loved for his dad to see his professional successes and championship belts. Despite this, Usyk often mentions his father in interviews and calls him the man who laid the foundation for all his future victories.

His mother still worries about every fight

The champion’s mother—Nadiya Petrivna Usyk—currently lives in the Chernihiv region. That is where the athlete’s father is buried. Oleksandr regularly visits his father’s grave when he sees his mother. There is another family tradition. After major victories, Usyk brings his championship belts and awards to his mother.

However, Nadiya Petrivna herself admits that she almost never watches her son’s fights. The reason is simple—she gets too nervous. After Usyk’s first fight against Tyson Fury, his mother even asked him to end his professional career. “I’m very worried about his health,” she said.

The boxer himself says that his mother’s support means a great deal to him. “I feel my mom’s support even when I step into the ring,” Usyk noted.

The Family That Shaped the Champion

Despite his global fame, Oleksandr Usyk often says that he learned all his core life values at home. From his father, he inherited discipline, a strong work ethic, and character. From his mother, he inherited care, warmth, and unconditional support. According to the champion himself, it was these qualities that helped him travel the long road from a boy in Simferopol to one of the best boxers of our time. This is discussed in a report by Channel 24.

Former world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has stated that he is ready to face Oleksandr Usyk in a bout that could be the Ukrainian’s final fight.
