Amazon and the Television Academy have signed a six-year agreement to stream the Emmy Awards ceremony on Prime Video. The broadcasts will begin with the 2027 ceremony, scheduled for September, and will be free for viewers worldwide without requiring a Prime Video subscription, The Verge reports.

Estimated cost of the rights

According to Deadline, Amazon will pay approximately $20 million to $25 million per year for the broadcasting rights. Thus, the total value of the contract could exceed $120 million.

Television Academy Chairman Chris Abrego said that long-term television partners have contributed to establishing the Emmys as a cultural institution. According to him, a permanent platform on Prime Video will make it possible to develop this legacy through global reach and broader support for the academy's activities throughout the year.

Streaming services buy rights to awards shows

Streaming services are increasingly adding major live broadcasts to their catalogs. Netflix previously acquired the rights to broadcast the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while the Oscars ceremony is set to move to YouTube in 2029. This year, Apple TV won the most awards among networks at the Emmys, with the series Widow’s Bay receiving 14 awards.
