Human brain organoids transplanted into mice without cerebral cortex — Nature

Human cerebral cortex organoids grown from stem cells were transplanted into living mice without a cerebral cortex. This experimental model was examined by the authors of a Nature review devoted to research by Kaganovsky and co-authors.

Limitations of laboratory models

Brain organoids are models created from stem cells. They have transformed the study of human-specific developmental processes and disease-related features. At the same time, such models have limitations under laboratory conditions: they cannot mature beyond a certain stage, mostly do not interact with other brain structures, and do not produce a behavioral outcome.

Transplantation possibilities

As the review authors note, after transplantation, cellular models of the human cortex form neurons that are inaccessible for study in vitro. The authors view this approach as a way to overcome some of the limitations of laboratory models. It could also enable scientists to link brain damage to behavior.
