Anthropic confirms operation of a laboratory for biological experiments — TechCrunch

Anthropic has confirmed that it operates a biology laboratory where its artificial intelligence models can be used to conduct physical experiments. TechCrunch reports. Anthropic’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, told Reuters that the final validation of biological hypotheses will still require real laboratory work.

Laboratory operations

According to Kauderer-Abrams, the laboratory operates similarly to other biotechnology labs: Anthropic conducts its own research there and collaborates with external partners. The company did not disclose which specific projects the laboratory is working on, but said its work is not focused on drug development.

In April, Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio, a private AI biotechnology company. At the same time, Anthropic has clients and partners in the pharmaceutical industry and recently announced an agreement with Novo Nordisk to jointly develop drugs. The company also launched a verification program for life sciences researchers that gives vetted specialists access to its most powerful models.

AI potential and risks

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said last week that AI could cure most major diseases within the next five to ten years. At the same time, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Koxon, who left the company, warned that people developing AI sincerely believe it is possible that the technology could destroy humanity by the end of the decade.

Anthropic’s head of AI alignment also estimated the probability of artificial intelligence destroying humanity over the next decade at more than 10%. Amodei called on the industry to slow the development of the technology and introduce self-regulation, and has repeatedly described bioterrorism as one of the biggest AI-related risks.
