Anthropic unveils Sonnet 5.5 model with faster responses — TechCrunch

Anthropic has unveiled Sonnet 5.5, a new version of its mid-tier model. The developer positions it as a faster and less expensive assistant than the previous version for everyday tasks, including programming and creating office documents. TechCrunch reports on the release.

Speed and token consumption

According to Anthropic, Sonnet 5.5 operates 30% faster than Sonnet 5. The company also claims that the new model consumes tokens at a significantly slower rate, which should reduce the cost of using it.

Anthropic announced the previous version, Sonnet 5, about three months earlier. At the time, the model’s key feature was the efficient operation of agents — the ability to run them at a lower cost than competitors.

Working with agents and cybersecurity

In Anthropic’s lineup, Sonnet is less powerful than the Opus model, but the company considers it better suited to certain tasks due to its speed and flexibility. According to Anthropic’s benchmarks, Sonnet 5.5 outperforms Opus 5.5 in agentic programming. TechCrunch notes that this is likely due to the ability to run several agents without exceeding set spending limits.

Anthropic also said that Sonnet 5.5’s cyber capabilities are comparable to those of Opus 5. Therefore, Sonnet 5.5 became the first Sonnet model to which the same cyber safeguards as for the Fable and Opus models will be applied.

In the coming weeks, Anthropic plans to release an updated Haiku, the smallest model in its lineup. The company did not name an exact release date.
