NASA astronaut Jessica Meir shares curly hair care routine on the ISS
NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, who is aboard the International Space Station, posted a video on X with tips for caring for curly hair in microgravity. In the video, which lasts about five and a half minutes, she showed how she washes and dries her hair in orbit, Space.com reports.
Washing without a shower
Meir said that she uses no-rinse shampoo to wash her hair on the station. She pays particular attention to the scalp, where sweat and salt accumulate.
The astronaut also uses a bag of water: she carefully squeezes out a small amount of liquid and distributes it along the hair roots, rubbing it into her scalp. She then dries her hair with a separate T-shirt that she uses for this purpose. Meir noted that her hair is thick and curly.

Care in microgravity
Between washes, the astronaut does not use a brush, instead adjusting her hair with her hands and fingers. According to her, humidity on the ISS is not a significant problem, but she still uses a leave-in conditioner.
Meir compared the type of her curls on Earth and in space: type 3a curls become closer to type 3c in orbital conditions. She has been on the ISS since February and said that she is looking forward to a regular shower after returning to Earth.
