US Federal Trade Commission intensifies oversight of AI companies
In 2024, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) launched Operation AI Copy aimed at holding businesses accountable for misleading consumers through artificial intelligence. The initiative seeks to stop the use of AI to deceive, mislead, or defraud people.
According to FTC Deputy Director of Public Affairs Christopher Bissex, the agency has acted against companies making false claims about their AI products’ accuracy, initiated lawsuits over deceptive advertising, and demanded further information about how businesses manage AI chatbot risks, particularly involving children. This effort aligns with the US President’s AI Action Plan.
Going forward, stricter transparency requirements and enhanced consumer protection oversight of AI companies are expected.
