The American company Google has filed a lawsuit over the use of its Gemini artificial intelligence model by the Chinese cybercrime group Outsider Enterprise to automate large-scale phishing campaigns. The attackers used AI to generate code and rapidly create thousands of fake websites that mimicked well-known brands and U.S. government services.
Law enforcement agencies and mobile operators joined forces to dismantle this infrastructure. In just two weeks in May, 2.5 million malicious messages were sent to Android users via the network, and the total number of victims is in the hundreds of thousands.
The criminal group coordinated its activities via Telegram, where it distributed ready-made software kits for creating fake websites. Using artificial intelligence tools, the scammers developed 131 phishing kits, which allowed them to generate over 9,000 fake websites and a million fake web addresses. Victims were sent messages about blocked accounts or problems with package delivery, luring them into revealing passwords and credit card information. FBI officials highlighted the rapid rise in cybercrimes involving AI, as such technologies make fraudulent schemes far more convincing and difficult to detect.
