Elon Musk backed Anthropic’s call to slow AI development — MarketWatch
SpaceX chief Elon Musk supported Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call to slow the development of new artificial intelligence models due to potential cybersecurity risks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed a similar position, MarketWatch reports.
Concerns over autonomous agents
In a blog post, Amodei said that accelerating AI capabilities could create a risk of a large number of autonomous AI agents capable of acting jointly, getting out of control, and carrying out large-scale cyberattacks. In his assessment, within six to twelve months, such a group of agents could potentially gain the ability to take over the entire internet.
The head of Anthropic warned that such a scenario could cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. He called for artificial intelligence to be developed at a balanced pace, combining technology safety with its potential benefits and taking geopolitical dilemmas into account.

Independent safety assessment
Amodei also proposed involving independent AI evaluators with access similar to that of company employees to verify whether models comply with safety rules. According to him, Anthropic is unilaterally committing to introduce such a mechanism and strengthen its work on AI safety and alignment.
Sam Altman supported the idea of independent assessment and said that OpenAI would do the same. Elon Musk briefly agreed with Amodei’s position. Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX did not promptly provide comments to MarketWatch.
The statements came after a post by former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon, who said he had left the company because, in his view, AI developers are too focused on competition and do not sufficiently consider safety issues. The discussion is taking place ahead of Anthropic’s expected IPO, which, according to reports, could value the company at about $2 trillion.
