Blizzard announces StarCraft as an open-world shooter for 2030
Blizzard has announced a new StarCraft game scheduled for release in 2030. The project will be an open-world shooter rather than a new top-down real-time strategy game, The Verge reports.
Announcement at BlizzCon
Blizzard Vice President Dan Hay announced the series’ return at BlizzCon. The new game will simply be called StarCraft. According to the outlet, the franchise has not released new projects for more than a decade since the last expansion for StarCraft II.
A cinematic trailer for the game was shown during the presentation. It focuses on the human faction, the United Earth Directorate, which is preparing for a confrontation with the Zerg. The Protoss are mentioned only briefly in the video.

Blizzard’s previous attempt
Blizzard has previously attempted to bring the StarCraft universe into the format of a three-dimensional shooter. StarCraft: Ghost was presented in 2002, but its development continued for years. In 2014, Blizzard President Mike Morhaime confirmed that the project had been canceled.
The trailer for the new game shows wartime propaganda and a character’s encounter with the brutal reality of combat. At the same time, as The Verge notes, some fans of the series are still awaiting a full-fledged continuation of the StarCraft II strategy game, which was released in 2010.
