China releases first national set of reference satellite images
China has released its first national set of reference geometric Earth remote sensing images covering the country’s entire land territory. ECNS reports, citing the Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
0.5-meter resolution
The dataset has an overall spatial resolution of 0.5 meters. According to the center, it has more than doubled the positioning accuracy of remote sensing images across the country.
According to ECNS, the set also addresses long-standing technical issues in mountainous, high-altitude and uninhabited areas. In particular, this concerns insufficient geometric accuracy of orthophotos, which had previously affected images of western China.

A foundation for satellite data
The reference geometric images will serve as a standardized base-map template for satellite remote sensing data. The plan is to enable the precise alignment of satellite images from different enterprises and government agencies and create a unified national background map.
The ministry said the dataset is expected to reduce the cost of producing high-resolution remote sensing data and improve operational efficiency. The agency also plans to promote broader use of the set and its dynamic updating.
