Photo service Retro raises more than $21M in Series A round — TechCrunch

Retro, a photo-sharing app for friends created by former Instagram product engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson, has raised more than $21 million in a Series A funding round. TechCrunch reports, citing a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The SEC filing was made on behalf of the startup Lone Palm Labs. The document is dated August 19 and states that the funding round closed in December. PitchBook values the startup at more than $100 million. Retro did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

App features

Retro launched in 2023 as a personal photo diary. Since then, the service has expanded its capabilities: users can privately share photos from the week with friends, create shared albums, view and share recaps, and revisit previous photo memories using the Rewind feature.

The app is not monetized through advertising. Instead, the company offers in-app subscriptions with support for videos, GIF and sticker comments, additional styles, unlimited history, and special icons.

Downloads and investors

According to app analytics service Appfigures, Retro has been downloaded approximately 7 million times since launch. User spending within the app has increased by more than 460% over the past 180 days.

Other Retro investors include Thrive Capital, Figma CEO Dylan Field, Scribble Ventures, Box Group, Imaginary Ventures, Coalition, Conviction, Copper, Positive Sum, and a number of private investors.
