China creates the world’s first self-reproducing hybrid rice
Chinese scientists have developed a new type of hybrid rice capable of passing high-yield traits to the next generation through its own seeds. This innovation will help farmers avoid the costly annual purchase of hybrid seeds.

The new variety was created by researchers at Southwest University in Chongqing and has successfully passed initial field trials. Previously, the hybrid rice traits were lost by the second generation, preventing seed reuse. This development changes that limitation.
This breakthrough could significantly enhance global food security, especially benefiting developing countries where farmers often cannot afford expensive hybrid seeds.
