LEGO has released eight interactive Star Wars Smart Play sets

LEGO has released eight Star Wars sets featuring the Smart Play system, which adds light and sound effects to the play experience without requiring a mobile app. The sets are designed for children, according to Space.com.

The core element of the system is the Smart Brick—an interactive brick with sound and lighting. It reacts to printed Smart Tags located on other building pieces or minifigures. Depending on the tag, the brick plays corresponding sounds or activates light effects. For example, in the Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set, the throne plays the “Imperial March,” and the Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader minifigures can accompany the duel with lightsaber battle sounds.

The Smart Play sets that include a Smart Brick are Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, Throne Room Duel & A-Wing, and Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter. Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing features a command center, a refueling station, and an Imperial turret, as well as interactive minifigures of Luke and Princess Leia. The Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set includes two Smart Bricks and interactive minifigures of Luke, Darth Vader, and Emperor Palpatine.

Five more models are compatible with Smart Play, but do not include a Smart Brick: the Millennium Falcon, Mos Eisley Cantina, AT-ST Attack on Endor, Luke’s Landspeeder, and Yoda’s Hut and Jedi Training. The Millennium Falcon consists of 885 pieces; its interactive minifigures are Chewbacca, Han Solo, C-3PO, and Luke Skywalker. The set can reproduce the sounds of a hyperdrive, laser battles, and explosions.

In the Mos Eisley Cantina, the minifigures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Grido are interactive. The Dewback in this set can make walking and sleeping sounds, and the cantina itself can play music and the sounds of drinks being mixed. Luke’s Landspeeder, with 215 pieces, is designed for children ages six and up and features a tag that plays sounds of the speeder moving and refueling. The AT-ST Attack on Endor consists of 347 pieces and includes an AT-ST, a speeder bike, and three minifigures, including the interactive Ewok Wicket.
