Lexar plans to release 3.8 mm-thick portable Muse SSD
Lexar plans to release later this year the Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD, a portable solid-state drive measuring 3.8 mm thick at its thickest central point. The device will be available in 512 GB and 1 TB versions and, as The Verge reports, will be among the thinnest portable SSDs on the market.
Thin body and speed
At the edges, the drive's body tapers to 1 mm. Lexar attributes this design to the dense layout of NAND memory and a special ultra-thin printed circuit board architecture.
The stated data read speed is up to 1,050 MB/s, while write speed is up to 1,000 MB/s. With these specifications, the drive can record 4K video in Apple ProRes format at up to 120 frames per second when connected to a compatible iPhone.

Magnetic cable instead of USB-C
To reduce the body's thickness, Lexar abandoned a standard USB-C port. Instead, the Muse uses a proprietary SnapLink cable that magnetically attaches to a connector with spring contacts on the side of the drive.
This solution means that users will have to keep the SnapLink cable, as the drive cannot be connected without it. The manufacturer does not specify the strength of the magnets, and the magnetic attachment may accidentally disconnect during file transfers.
To record video via a smartphone, the drive must be placed in the included magnetic case to attach it to the back of the phone. At the same time, the case noticeably increases the overall thickness of the setup.
