Microsoft stops using the Copilot Plus PC brand — The Verge

Microsoft is abandoning the Copilot Plus PC brand for computers with built-in artificial intelligence capabilities. The new 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop formally meet the system requirements of this category, but the company no longer calls them Copilot Plus PCs.

New Surface devices without the Copilot Plus PC label

Brett Ostrom, vice president of the Microsoft Surface division, told Windows Central that the new devices do not carry the Copilot Plus PC name. The Verge reports on the change in approach.

Kedar Kondap, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of computing and gaming technologies, also suggested that computers with the same capabilities will likely no longer use this label. The Copilot Plus PC brand was intended to distinguish devices with sufficient built-in AI capabilities to run the relevant Windows features.

Criticism of AI features

One of the key Copilot Plus PC features was Recall, which, according to The Verge, did not receive a favorable response. Microsoft was also criticized for intrusive prompts to use AI features in Windows. The company previously added a dedicated Copilot key to keyboards, which can now be remapped.

As the publication notes, the basic AI capabilities on which the brand was based are gradually becoming commonplace for most personal computers. At the same time, Microsoft’s flagship hardware may soon receive Nvidia chips, according to The Verge. The company has announced a discussion for October 7 on how local AI will shape the next stage in the development of personal computers.
