Mykola Gomzov: “The U.S. telecommunications market offers unique opportunities for implementing large-scale projects”
In 2026, the global telecommunications industry is facing a severe labor shortage. According to IDC analysts, up to 90% of companies are struggling to find enough top managers and engineers to deploy networks. Demand for recognized experts is particularly high in the U.S., where every project must comply with strict government standards and safety regulations.
A striking example of successful integration into the American market is Ukrainian engineer Mykola Gomzov. With extensive experience at Ukrtelecom and Kyivstar, he now designs networks for Spectrum and T-Mobile.
In addition, Mykola became a Senior Member of the prestigious IEEE, joined the editorial board of the scientific journal *Universal Library of Engineering Technology*, and became a member of the jury for the Cases&Faces business award.
We spoke with him about adjusting to life in a new country, the differences between engineering schools in Ukraine and the U.S., and his international professional recognition.
– Was moving to Florida a deliberate decision or a coincidence? What was the most challenging part during the first few months?
– It was a fully deliberate step in my professional development and an entry into a larger telecommunications market. My main challenge at the start was adapting to the U.S. regulatory environment, local terminology, and contracting practices. Despite my extensive engineering experience, I had to thoroughly familiarize myself with FCC standards and OSHA safety regulations. A systematic approach to project management helped me navigate this process as quickly as possible.
– You worked as an engineer in Ukraine, and now you’ve become an expert in the U.S. In what ways is it more challenging—and in what ways more interesting—for a specialist with your background?
– Working conditions depend on the size of the market and the volume of investment. The U.S. telecom market has a massive volume of capital investment, which opens up unique opportunities for implementing large-scale projects.
At the same time, Ukrainian engineering education has traditionally been strong in terms of in-depth technical training and fundamental knowledge. Professional complexity is determined not by geography, but by the level and ambition of the tasks facing the specialist.
– You have been granted IEEE Senior Member status, joined the editorial board of a scientific journal, and serve on the jury of an international award. Why would a practicing engineer take on such public responsibilities?
– IEEE Senior Member status is international recognition of my expert contribution to the development of telecommunications infrastructure. Serving on the editorial board of a specialized journal and on the jury for the Cases&Faces award reflects an objective assessment of my competencies.
For me, this isn’t just a formality on my resume, but a professional responsibility—an opportunity to participate in shaping industry standards and exchange cutting-edge solutions with the global professional community.
– You also write research articles on risk mitigation and the optimization of communications network construction. What industry challenges do they address, and why is this important for major clients?
– My articles are aimed at solving practical problems: optimizing contracting models, reducing investment risks, and applying analytical tools in infrastructure projects.
The main goal is to formalize accumulated practical experience into structured engineering solutions that colleagues around the world can use to develop standards.
– What do you miss most about Ukraine while living in Florida?
– What I value most is the close connection with my family and the professional community I worked with in Ukraine.
At the same time, today’s telecommunications market is truly global. Thanks to digital technologies, professional collaboration and the exchange of expertise are no longer limited by strict geographical boundaries.
