NASA has unveiled smart underwear for lunar missions, developed in collaboration with Prada

Axiom Space and Prada have unveiled a new cooling suit for astronauts, which will be used during future lunar missions under the Artemis program.

The new piece of equipment, called the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), will be worn under the AxEMU spacesuit during work on the lunar surface and spacewalks.

The suit is equipped with a system of tubes through which cold water circulates. It draws excess heat away from the astronaut’s body and helps maintain a comfortable temperature inside the spacesuit. The system also features a backup cooling circuit in case the primary one fails.

In addition to cooling, the LCVG provides ventilation. The system supplies fresh oxygenated air to the helmet and draws exhaled carbon dioxide into the purification system for subsequent recirculation.

The new suit will be part of the AxEMU spacesuit, which is planned for use during the Artemis IV mission. According to NASA’s current plans, this mission is set to deliver astronauts to the Moon in 2028.

The collaboration between Axiom Space and Prada has become one of the most famous examples of the design industry’s involvement in space technology. The developers emphasize that the main goal of the project is to combine comfort, safety, and functionality for working in the extreme conditions of space.

As a reminder, NASA is testing the new X-59 flying machine, which promises silent supersonic flight.

NASA is also threatening to remove SpaceX from the Artemis lunar mission.
