Norway tightens cybersecurity after discovering remote access in Chinese buses

In Norway, tests revealed that Chinese-made Yutong electric buses could be remotely shut down by the manufacturer through software access. The findings showed that the company retained remote control capabilities for diagnostics and software updates.

Public transport operator Ruter announced it would strengthen cybersecurity protocols and restrict external system access following the discovery. The comparison tests between Yutong and Dutch-made VDL buses confirmed that only the Chinese vehicles had this remote connectivity feature.

Experts warned the system could “theoretically be exploited to stop the buses,” raising national security and cyber risk concerns within Norway’s public transport network.
