Flutter investigation highlights illegal gambling in Meta’s ecosystem

One of the largest gambling operators, Flutter, enlisted cybersecurity expert and government advisor Alex Wood to analyze the promotion mechanisms of illegal gambling sites in the UK. The investigation’s findings have once again drawn attention to how Meta’s services may be facilitating the spread of such platforms.

The investigation revealed that Meta AI chatbots on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger could recommend illegal platforms to users. Specifically, when asked about sites that do not require document verification, the bot provided lists of offshore bookmakers. Checks confirmed that these “grey” sites allow account registration with fictitious or inaccurate data, indicating a lack of effective oversight.

It was also observed that illegal services are openly promoted on Instagram and Facebook under slogans like “Not on GamStop,” targeting gamblers seeking to bypass regulatory restrictions. This creates further risks for users and complicates efforts to combat unlawful gambling.

Meta Platforms, the corporation behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is one of the world’s largest social media companies. Despite ongoing updates to algorithms and policies, instances of illegal services promotion call into question the effectiveness of these measures.

In summary, Flutter’s investigation sheds light on systemic challenges in regulating online gambling and protecting users from illicit platforms. The absence of robust control mechanisms and algorithmic shortcomings may continue to allow prohibited services to proliferate.

Looking ahead, we can expect stricter demands on Meta and similar companies concerning content moderation and recommendation algorithms, alongside increased regulatory action aimed at reducing illegal gambling risks.
