An ancient computer recovered from the sea continues to amaze scientists
An artifact discovered on the seabed remains one of the greatest mysteries of ancient science. We are referring to the bronze mechanism known as the Antikythera Mechanism, which was recovered from the depths of the sea in 1901. Scientists are still debating how such a complex device could have been created in ancient times without modern technology.

The Antikythera Mechanism is an ancient bronze mechanical “computer” from the 1st century BCE, discovered in 1901 on a sunken Roman ship near the island of Antikythera.
It functioned as an astronomical calculator: it predicted eclipses, tracked the movements of the Moon and planets, and utilized a complex gear system that was not seen in technology for the next 1,400 years.
The device consisted of approximately 30–37 bronze gears housed in a wooden case. The user turned a handle, and the dials displayed the positions of celestial bodies, the phases of the Moon, and calendar cycles, including the Metonic and Saros cycles for predicting eclipses.
The mechanism also accounted for the Moon’s irregular motion using a special pin joint that reproduced the lunar anomaly—a complex astronomical effect described as early as by ancient Greek scholars.
Its origin is not precisely known, but it is most often associated with the tradition of Greek astronomers, particularly Archimedes or Hipparchus. No similar devices existed in Europe until the 14th century.
The Antikythera mechanism is considered the most complex known mechanical artifact of antiquity and a unique example of ancient high engineering.
