A woman has died in Brazil; her family blames artificial intelligence — MG1
The introduction of cutting-edge digital technologies into Brazil’s healthcare system has led to a high-profile tragedy that has sparked widespread international outrage.
The family of 32-year-old Rebeca Cardoso Tenente Molina is officially accusing the artificial intelligence system integrated into the operations of public hospitals of negligence and involuntary manslaughter.
Due to a technical glitch and an erroneous assessment of the patient’s condition, the artificial intelligence algorithm denied the woman urgent admission to the intensive care unit for several days in a row.
Rebeca Cardoso Tenente Molina was admitted to the hospital on June 2, 2026, in the city of São João Nepomuceno, located in the state of Minas Gerais. Doctors quickly gave her a preliminary diagnosis of “suspected gallstone disease.”
The young woman’s condition was rapidly deteriorating by the hour; she was experiencing acute, unbearable pain and, together with the hospital staff, begged to be transferred immediately to the intensive care unit.
However, the medical staff was hindered by an AI-based automated management system recently implemented in the state’s hospitals, called Core-MG.
The neural network, analyzing the patient’s daily data, systematically underestimated the severity of her condition and blocked the allocation of a bed.
Molina’s family was forced to urgently hire private lawyers and go to court to legally compel the digital system to approve the transfer.
The deceased’s twin sister, Samela Cardoso Tenente Furtado, a lawyer, described in detail how artificial intelligence deprived real doctors of the right to manage the treatment process and save lives.
She emphasized the complete loss of autonomy among frontline medical workers due to total digitization. Relatives consider this practice a direct threat to patients’ lives.
“We saw that doctors have lost their autonomy in determining the severity of a patient’s condition. Whether a patient is critically ill is no longer determined by the doctor at the patient’s bedside, but by an automated center. My sister was in extremely critical condition and should have received the highest level of urgency, a 10. Instead, the system rated her condition at only 6.8 points. The program refused to raise the level based on tests, so other patients with higher scores artificially jumped ahead of her in the queue for intensive care,” Samela stated.
Due to linguistic and mathematical algorithms for allocating available beds, the AI forced the critically ill woman to wait five long days for emergency care.
Only after direct judicial intervention did they finally agree to transfer her to another specialized hospital located 300 km from her hometown.
Doctors cited severe septic shock as the clinical cause of Rebecca’s death, and a forensic medical examination is currently investigating an additional possibility—botulism infection.
