Peter Thiel invests $2 billion in Halter’s AI-powered cattle collars

Billionaire Peter Thiel is investing $2 billion in Halter, a company that has developed GPS collars for cows using its proprietary Cowgorithm algorithm, allowing farmers to guide their herds via a mobile app without physical fences.

This technology replaces traditional fences and herding dogs by employing sound and vibration signals, powered by solar panels. The collar monitors cow health, fertility cycles, and digestion in real time using artificial intelligence trained on data from hundreds of thousands of cows.

American farmers have already used this system to create over 11,000 miles of virtual fencing — roughly equivalent to the perimeter of the continental US — saving about $220 million in fence construction and maintenance.

Halter was founded by a former Rocket Lab engineer who aimed to create a more resilient farming system through innovation, addressing complexities beyond those encountered in space exploration.

By combining modern technology and machine learning, Halter is transforming farming practices to improve operational efficiency and animal welfare.

Looking ahead, such technology could expand to other animals or even humans, raising important ethical and practical considerations.
