Google and OpenAI employees urge to stop use of their technology for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons
Employees of leading technology firms, including Google and OpenAI, have appealed to their management to prevent their technologies from being used for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens and control of autonomous lethal systems. This appeal came as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to ban government agencies from collaborating with Anthropic, the developer of the AI system Claude. The ban was triggered by Anthropic’s demand that the Pentagon comply with ethical standards, which the president rejected.
According to Forbes, after OpenAI allowed its AI models to be used in U.S. defense projects, more than 1.5 million users stopped using the ChatGPT service. This reflects significant ethical and public concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in military applications.
Further discussions between technology companies and government bodies regarding the regulation of AI use in defense and its societal impact are likely in the near future.
