US President Trump dismisses risk of human extinction from AI
US President Donald Trump said he has no concerns about the possible extinction of humanity due to artificial intelligence. Instead, he stressed the need for the United States to maintain its lead over China in AI development.

Answering journalists’ questions on Thursday, Trump said he was concerned about the possibility of the United States falling behind in artificial intelligence. In his assessment, the United States is ahead of China by about a year.
The United States and China are competing for leadership in AI. Tensions are increasing amid the development of Chinese models and their growing use around the world.
As CNBC Top News reports, the president’s statement came after researchers at Anthropic and OpenAI publicly intensified warnings about the rapid pace of development of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.

Researchers’ statements
Anthropic researcher Jacob Koxon said he is leaving the company due to concerns about the actions of Anthropic and its competitor OpenAI. According to him, AI developers believe that the technology could kill all humans by the end of the decade; other laboratory employees have voiced similar concerns.
Some concerns about AI safety are linked to recursive self-improvement — the potential ability of models to independently increase their own performance. OpenAI researcher Jasmin Wang, who works on aligning AI with human goals, warned of the danger of accelerated progress toward such capabilities. OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki also said that the pace of progress may continue and expressed concern about a lack of preparedness for the consequences of rapid growth in machine intelligence.
Congressional initiatives
In the US Congress, representatives of both parties are advancing initiatives to strengthen oversight of the development of advanced AI models. In July, Representatives Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan announced their intention to introduce the FRONTIER Act, which is intended to create a framework for regulating the deployment of advanced models.
Earlier this month, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. The bill provides for a temporary suspension of the development of advanced AI systems until federal safety rules are introduced.
